Ewa Słapa is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, installation, and photography.

Born in Poland, she studied Polish Philology and Fine Art at the University of Kraków before moving to the United States. She received a BFA in Fine Art with an emphasis in Photography and Sculpture from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of California, Irvine.

She currently teaches at the University of California, San Diego and ArtCenter College of Design. Słapa is also a co-founder of PHASE Gallery, a contemporary art space in Los Angeles dedicated to experimental and emerging art practices, performances, readings, and lectures.

Ewa Słapa's work investigates processes of formation. ​Drawing from philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, she examines how human subjects acquire form and how the worlds they inhabit come to appear natural, coherent, and real.

​

Working through sculpture and installation, Słapa employs materials such as coal dust, wax, rubber, steel, and photographic processes to explore the relationship between physical structures and the processes through which experience is organized and meaning is produced.

At the center of her practice lies a fundamental question: How does form emerge from conditions that remain largely invisible? Not only sculptural form, but also the form of a self, a memory, a belief, or a worldview. Through material and spatial investigations, her work traces the unstable boundary between physical reality and its internal construction.
